Cinematographer  -  Director of Photography  -  Surrealist​

Wesley Hunt is an award-winning cinematographer based in the DC Metro area.  A freelance director of photography and camera operator, he founded Lux Obscura Films LLC, in 2017.

 

Though he makes a living shooting educational and corporate videos, his real passion is genre filmmaking.  He has extensive experience with over two dozen short sci-fi and horror films and served as cinematographer on the feature-length dark comedy, Kringle Time.  His work has screened at many domestic and international film festivals.  During his schooling he studied and worked on films in places such as Prague, Czechia, and Venice, Italy.  With Gorcin Zec, he co-founded belowSuspicion, which specializes in improvised, surreal short films.

 

A horror aficionado, he enjoys twisted, existential, and lovecraftian tales of terror.  Inspired by an eclectic mix of surrealism, expressionism, medieval history, and the occult, his style is a mix of formalist framing, garish color, and deep shadows.   His background is in the fine visual arts, like painting and sculpture, rather than in photography, and so, he approaches his work with a painter's eye, rather than that of a gear head.

Which is not to say there's no technical knowledge.  His camera system is Sony-based and consists of two full 4k packages with Prime lenses, Zooms, sliders, and a large selection of lighting and grip gear.  He is also familiar with RED, Canon, and Blackmagic Design camera systems.  In addition, he trained on celluloid film, having worked as DP or AC on nearly two dozen 16mm films, and brings the film discipline and workflow to his sets.

A native of Northern Virginia, in his spare time he enjoys painting, cooking, board games, and spending time with his wife, children, and kitties.  He's an avid traveller and speaks Italian.  He also occasionally teaches filmmaking and film studies at the university level.
